My collaborators and I recently published two new papers where we develop and apply a new "inverse" approach to identifying pollutants in river networks. I've written a plain language explainer here: alexlipp.github.io/posts/202… 1/

Great to see @Channel4News & @ecomaeve put together such an awesome explainer about Sewagemap, in the wider context of river pollution in the UK! Nice cameo from @ashsmith43 at the end too!
What’s the most polluted place to swim in the UK? A new map shows which rivers and seas contain the most sewage around the country. The map was created by scientists at UCL - and it’s live - so you can check when the most recent sewage spill happened in your local area. Last year activists wanted an ‘environmental emergency' to be declared - after research showed three quarters of all UK rivers pose a serious risk to human health. Now, the government wants water companies to pay for the damage they caused, but there's a catch - the money is going to come from our water bills going up. Founder of Windrush Against Sewage, Ash Smith, tells us the "privatised water industry is milking the bill-payer".

…but as ever Jonny and I have been stymied by most water companies limiting the data they release! 🙄🙄 2/3

All the source-code, and the live polluted river reach data is #opensource and #opendata at github.com/AlexLipp/sew... Suggestions, ideas and contributions very welcome!

'We need to rebuild public trust in our river – and sewer – networks.' A new UK law is forcing water companies to make pollution data readily accessible to the general public - but it doesn’t go far enough, writes @AlexGLipp ⬇️ theconversation.com/water-co…
