This is really beneath you Joe. @TonyJuniper doesn’t hate Dartmoor ponies. Natural England are merely stating that the government cannot continue to subsidise hugely damaging over-grazing on Dartmoor, but have left it to the commoners to agree on how they reduce grazing pressure, whilst providing them with expert advice. The commoners have now latched onto a campaign of ‘save the cute ponies’ to justify continue being paid subsidies (ie taxpayer money!) to over exploit a communal resource. I’m surprised that you have been taken in by such an obvious cheap campaigning trick. naturalengland.blog.gov.uk/2….

Hello to the 6,300 new followers. Though you’ve doubtlessly come for the World Cup geography posts, I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with a bit of this. Me today celebrating Scotland’s win by going to see some snow in the Cairngorms. Yes, this is Scotland in summer.

Yesterday, I sat on stage with the Chief Executive of United Utilities, Louise Beardmore. A few key public commitments: United Utilities committed to ending sewage pollution in Windermere. United Utilities acknowledged that sewage is the primary driver of the issues our lake is facing and that we need to go beyond current investment. From the moment the spades hit the ground, we could have an end to sewage entering Windermere, Grasmere, Elterwater, Esthwaite, Blelham Tarn, Rydal and the surrounding rivers in just seven years. The engineering study, completed in July and published in September, will outline the engineering roadmap, economic appraisal and environmental benefits of ending sewage pollution in our lake. We have been overseeing this study. We have ensured that the outcome reflects what our lake needs, and we have made it clear that we will not stop until our lake is free from sewage. United Utilities has come a long way throughout our campaign. From denying the problem, to having the organisation’s leader agreeing with us on what needs to happen to protect our lake for the next century and beyond. You have to give Louise a lot of credit for getting the company to this stage and for being willing to sit on stage next to me and have this conversation. Now is our moment to end sewage pollution in Windermere. We have never been closer. Now is the time to increase the pressure and make sure this commitment turns into action. Massive thank you to Adam Vaughan from the Times for moderating.

Having said that, great reporting from @alextomo on @Channel4News tonight. I have heard no-one else make the obvious link between loyalism and racism; the rest of the media has always ignored/buried the issue

Weird but stunning shapes yesterday in a quiet corner of the Ben Macdui/Cairn Gorm plateau. Understandably, the photographer did not linger long underneath the snow for fear of being on the receiving end of tumbling chunks. Photos by Matt Brown facebook.com/groups/snowpatc…

Football’s probe into West Ham’s owner is welcome. We look forward to football officials now probing how an outfit which butchered and tape-recorded its murder of a respected journalist is fit and proper to run Newcastle United FC?

Really good news. Over the last 15 years the world gained more mangroves than it has lost, thanks to stronger legal protections following the 2004 tsunami which proved their importance in protecting coasts. Also vital for fish and in absorbing carbon. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cn4p…

Excellent interview with @paulpowlesland and his gang of river guardians. Given the government's current war on nature, we all need to be Paul Powlesland's right now.
