Much of the praise surrounding the new Superman movie seems to stem, at least in part, from the simple fact that at least it’s not Zack Snyder’s version. As if a grounded, respectful, and serious interpretation of the character is somehow more offensive than: -Jor-El wanting Superman to have a harem -A sloppy drunk Supergirl -Superman getting kicked in the crotch -Jimmy Olsen portrayed as a womanizer -Cheap-looking costumes -Humor that constantly undercuts the drama -An overstuffed plot -Too many characters (Remember when this was a huge complaint during BvS? That it was rushing too many characters into one movie?) -Superman unable to control his emotions -Monkeys flooding social media with hateful posts (I mean, what the actual hell?) -Awful, cheap-looking CGI -Superman constantly getting beat up, despite being, you know, Superman -Choppy, nauseating editing And the list goes on. It’s like the film’s entire identity is:
“THIS ISN’T A ZACK SNYDER FILM AHAHAHA ISN’T THIS FUN AND HILARIOUS?!” Contrary to what some might think, I am open to other interpretations of Superman, unlike the Snyder-antis. I would’ve been fine seeing a different take after Snyder and Cavill finished telling their story. But that never happened. Because a bunch of gatekeeping fans threw a decade-long tantrum and refused to engage in good faith with the story Snyder was telling. And because of that, we now get Supermeh. To quote another well-known comic book movie: “You get what you f—ing deserve.” #Superman is what you deserve.
