Beyond excited to say my first PhD paper (and first first-author) is out today in @Nature 🤯. Taking a new approach to key innovations, we show rapidly gaining/losing complex teeth accelerates speciation in fishes. Look out for a longer thread soon…
Super proud of my 2nd PhD paper exploring shifts in evo. integration among reef fish fins with expansions in locomotor modes, out now in Evolution. Within modes there is much diversity in fin shape and weak connections between form and function. doi.org/10.1093/evolut/qpae1…
Americans have no idea how difficult legal immigration is for "high-skilled immigrants".
I have 4 degrees incl a PhD. Einstein visa. 250K salary at FAANG. Lived in this country since I was a teenager.
I won't be able to obtain citizenship until middle age
Guide for Intl PhDs🧵
Since we're talking about funding of absurd research by NIH and other federal agencies, the funded scientists:
- watching flies fuck
- giving rats massages
- spending years digging into why jellyfish glow
- tracking penguin poop from space
- using horseshoe crab blood
New OA paper on the roles of complexity and integration in the morphological diversification of reef fishes! doi.org/10.1038/s42003-024-0…
This was a BIG collaborative effort led by Profs Mike D. Burns @fishwright3! Thankful to have been a part of this incredible team!
Brand new open access paper alert! We are thrilled to introduce our findings on how "Complexity and weak integration promote the diversity of reef fish oral jaws" out now in Communications Biology led by Dr. Mike Burns

I knocked a lot of doors this past year on my campaign and asked people what issues were most important to them. Here are some of the key takeaways from my time spent talking to people here in Texas:
It's so cool how everything from prescription drugs to McDonald's to frozen waffles is contaminated now. It's almost like government regulations were the only thing keeping manufacturers from cutting costs and poisoning us.
🚨🚨College Students in Wisconsin are being sent automated texts that they will face legal action for filling out their mail-in ballots in university housing. This is 100% VOTER INTIMIDATION. It’s perfectly LEGAL to vote on campus! Don’t let them fool you!
ALT Figure 1 from the paper. Illustrations of the the oral (lateral view; shaded in black) and pharyngeal (lateral view; shaded in gold) jaw structures involved in prey capture and processing function are shown at the top. Photos show closed mouth (left) and maximum gape (right) stages of feeding motions for a subset of 12 species. There is a phylogeny on the right hand side plotting a stochastic character map shows the relatedness of the 228 study species across 43 acanthomorph families and the evolutionary character history of the MPJ
So while the MPJ facilitates transitions to durophagy & herbivory, it limits diversification in other ways! Thus, we emphasize the importance of examining the consequences of specialized traits within a comparative framework, as their presence may not be uniformly advantageous!
With this publication, all of my dissertation work is out!!!! Very thankful to all my mentors, collaborators, peers who helped me get to this point!
Stay tuned for more fish fun as I continue my research as a postdoc @unibern in @OleSeehausen's group!

I am SO PROUD to say that the indomitable @Alexuss_Symone 's 3rd ch. is OUT NOW at Evolution Letters!
With me, @cmart_fishmorph , & Peter Wainwright, we find that a famous key innovation in feeding apparatus LIMITS functional diversification!
