This past weekend, June 6th, marked the second anniversary of the passing of my father, Daniel Thomas Flavin. Everyone who knew him knew what a truly incredible man, leader, and father he was. More than anything, I am profoundly grateful for the bedrock principles and values he raised me on: Faith, Family, and Hard Work.
The moral compass he gave us was the very thing that provided direction and strength, serving as the principle that got me across every single finish line in life. He lived by a simple, powerful truth that he always taught us: we are here on Earth to serve other people. He practiced exactly what he preached.
Many in our community remember his dedicated public service as a Louisiana State Legislator, where he fiercely advocated for the people of Southwest Louisiana from 1996 to 2005. He took immense pride in fighting for the right causes, building bridges across the political aisle, and always keeping his focus on assisting those in need. Beyond his civic service, his deep devotion to his faith and his community led to an extraordinary honor. On May 17, 2010, he was formally invested into the Order of St. Gregory the Great with a papal knighthood originally bestowed by Pope Benedict XVI.
What is the Order of St. Gregory the Great? Established in 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI, this honor is one of the five Orders of Knighthood of the Holy See. It is specifically awarded to individuals of unblemished character who have demonstrated conspicuous, outstanding personal service to the Holy See, the Catholic Church, and their local communities through their unusual labors, support, and excellent example. To receive a papal knighthood in this order is a direct recognition of a lifetime spent in service to others—a testament to a man who truly used his time on Earth to lift up everyone around him.
We miss him every day, but his legacy, his wit, and his lessons live on in all of us. Rest in peace, Dad.
