I don't think gaming enthusiast blogs are ready for the reality of rebuilding a business. Like I said a few days ago, General Electric did it, but it was difficult (and painful for many people) to say the least. Entire businesses were sold, downsized, or closed. Investments were limited to the most successful products. Over the next 6-7 years, the company focused on nothing but running a few businesses well, making sure they were given what they needed to succeed. It took years, not months. You are not prepared if you think this is going to be done by next week.

Layoffs are an unfortunate inevitability when a company goes through major restructuring. But the catastrophizing from industry pundits rings hollow. Most of it amounts to faux concern. And the proof is simple enough: you don’t see the same level of hand‑wringing when Embracer, Sony, or Ubisoft make similar decisions. Some argue that Microsoft’s size warrants heightened scrutiny, but larger companies cast longer shadows. People project expectations onto it, so any misstep is treated as a breach of an unwritten social contract rather than a routine business correction. What we’re seeing now isn’t a principled defence of workers or studios. It’s about engagement. Outrage drives clicks, and many of these reactions reflect that incentive far more than any genuine concern for the people affected.

People need to give the new Xbox leadership a chance. Yes studio closures are terrible. Game cancellations are crap. Lord knows I was most disappointed in the Perfect Dark game being cancelled after the original N64 game being one of my all time greats. But in a volatile business as the games industry where more than ever, financials are constantly looked at and assessed and instead fan desires, people need to realise this shouldn't be surprising. Under Asha Sharma, Xbox is currently going through a mandated "business reset", which means a ruthless pivot toward immediate sustainability. The harsh reality of modern gaming is that massive tech corporations are no longer willing to endlessly subsidise all studios. When the directive from the top is to hit strict profit margins, smaller, highly creative teams like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and Compulsion Games end up facing closure or being spun off in favour of massive, reliable money-makers like Call of Duty, Fallout and Gears of War. It is absolutely devastating for the incredibly talented developers who pour their lives into these projects, and it sucks for us as fans. But math is taking precedence over art across the entire industry. Let’s see what this new leadership can build out of this reset before we write the platform off completely.

I'm all for transparency to be honest especially when the previous leadership were running the brand into the ground and forgot all about the community and what it truly meant to be an Xbox fan and gamer. Painful to read there are staff cuts incoming but I think we all knew hard decisions would have to be made down the road to counter what had gone on before.
