A programme of scientific modelling, response planning and community engagement designed to build a collective resilience to the next Alpine Fault m8 earthquake
Kia ora, thank you for your interest in AF8. This channel is no longer used or monitored by the AF8 Programme.
Please see our website for ways to get in touch with us: af8.org.nz – Ngā mihi!
After 3 AF8 Roadshows over the past 5 years, we are pleased to be able to share this new book chapter on what it’s all about!

Thanks to @DNEM_global for the opportunity to share this work.
Congrats and welcome to @Dr_TRob (@UCNZEarthEnv) our incoming AF8 Science Lead! Although 'new' to the role, Tom is no stranger to Alpine Fault science or AF8, having been involved in the original co-design of our AF8 Scenario, making ongoing contributions over the past 8-9yrs.
Tom's research focusses on improving our understanding of quake hazards and disaster risk, with particular interest in modelling earthquake-triggered landslides and their consequent impacts on people and critical lifelines over time.
Tom works throughout New Zealand and the Himalaya, including Nepal and Bhutan where he has been part of the science response to the Nepal Earthquake 2015.
🙌 Tag a teacher – The Alpine Fault and Our Active Faults NCEA Level 1 resource is live!
Join us for the launch of our new Geography Level 1 Resource! Find out what it is, who it's for and how you can use it in your classroom. Details registration here: af8.org.nz/the-alpine-fault-…
A big mihi to @eaglegis and kaiako from around NZ who have supported the development of this resource – with special thanks to Ashburton College for test driving the resource in the classroom :)
And of course, thanks to @EQCNZ for your sponsorship to make this all possible!
The AF8 Programme is seeking a suitably qualified scientist with active Alpine Fault hazard and risk-related research, and strong networks and connections across the science and emergency management sectors... Could this be you!?
With new beginnings also come endings, and we'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the huge contribution our outgoing AF8 Science Lead Associate Prof @COrchiston has made to the programme and our collective kaupapa over the past 7.5 yrs! Ngā mihi nui, Caroline!
