I'm so happy that I can tell our story openly, and not have to hide under the pseudonym Anna, as I have done for the last few years. Thank you @KitzingerCelia for all of your support - you are amazing. And my fellow
@OpenJusticeCoP team members.

Deprivation of Liberty needs to involve “element of coercion or externally imposed restrictions…& a person who is so profoundly disabled they are unable to conceptualise or physically achieve freedom is not in fact being deprived of anything.” - Discuss!

A new blog by Lorraine Currie on the Supreme Court's recent judgment.
She sees the judgment as having given back 'a common sense, multifactorial approach in place of a “one-size-fits-all” test'

In my opinion, a very useful explainer of last week’s Supreme Court judgment reversing Cheshire West, concerning Deprivation of Liberty. It’s
measured and sets out the issues clearly. They don’t see the decision as an attack on disability rights.

Another family contacted me....
I had to say "never forget the Court can conduct closed proceedings. You can be excluded by judge's orders from hearings about your relative. They may try to conceal from you that hearings are happening."
Awful but true.

Summaries of the position of the parties/interveners in the Supreme Court case revisiting Cheshire West - to be handed down tomorrow

A depressing case exposing delay in best interests decisions about ongoing life-sustaining treatment; but good to see the judge highlight concerns & that the judgment will be sent to the Secretary of State for Health Chief Executive of NHS England.

Dear @HMCTSgovuk
CourtServe has a hearing listed in Northampton for 1st June 2026 but no information about it (it just says "restricted"). It doesn't appear in the COP list.
Can you advise - is it going ahead please? What's it about?
ALT Page from Courtserve showing listing for COP 20026646
When Pelicot was arrested for upskirting, the police asked Giselle to accompany him to the station
She assumed it was standard. Instead they separated them at the station & asked her about her sex life
If she had multiple partners
If she was a swinger
If she was ‘kinky’

Giselle Pelicot told @hayfestival of the strength she gained from the women that showed up outside court each day. Because of them she stopped wearing a mask, took off her sunglasses.
Never underestimate the impact of simply being there 💜

HHJ Burrows has published a judgment about contact restrictions. Helpfully, @Capacitylaw has published a blog summarising the main points. One key take away for me is that "the court has limited powers over care providers" (§18).
