The former president and vice president of Duval Teachers United were sentenced to federal prison for embezzling over $2.6 million in union funds.
From 2013 to 2022, they stole more than $1.2 million each by selling back leave time they hadn't earned and paying themselves unauthorized bonuses and fake reimbursements.

Teachers’ unions like the AFT have seen a steady decline in membership since the landmark 2018 case Janus v. AFSCME.
This case held that public-sector unions cannot mandate that non-members pay union dues, meaning teachers who choose not to join also cannot be charged dues or agency fees.
