Soon the big companies like Google/Microsoft/Apple/Amazon etc. will provide most of what those StartUps offer for free

This is really big news if they can make it work with things like GPT4.
They say it can be added to any Transformer based models, so including GPT4.

Recurrent Memory Transformer retains information across up to 2 million tokens.
During inference, the model effectively utilized memory for up to 4,096 segments with a total length of 2,048,000 tokens—significantly exceeding the largest input size reported for transformer models (64K tokens for CoLT5 (Ainslie et al., 2023), and 32K tokens for GPT-4 (OpenAI, 2023)). This augmentation maintains the base model’s memory size at 3.6 GB in our experiments

It feels like yet another Dot Com Bubble of 2000.
People and VC types who have no clue about technology & what is unique and what is not are in a frenzy pouring in $millions in those StartUps who offer little more than a UI to some chatGPT API.

As far as software engineers concerned ChatGPT is best at providing bits of code quickly, give you a hint or a quick summary on something you are not quite familiar with or just forgot the details.
These are all things that the senior engineer on the team should always have done

.. or the team architects. But the assholes have most if the time preferred to be bossy and ridicule a junior engineer who didn't know how to solve a coding problem or just not professional enough.
This is also the main reason why many projects fail.
At least here in Germany.
