I wrote my first substack piece about AI's economic impact, and some reasons why models seem to underperform in the real world.

Between Politico and Axios we get a pretty clear picture that this was another case of 'the vibes are off and when we say jump they ask for an explanation rather than how high, so let's blow everything up.' Plus more whining about not getting Dario on the phone fast enough.

Replying to @anton_d_leicht
It just seems really naive to see it as safety related at all instead of as a lever for the government to try to pick winners in the AI race that will pay them bribes and support Republicans. These strong anti-selection forces against integrity are unlikely to go away.

I oppose this completely. We should not allow technological progress to be held hostage by capricious and foolish government officials. I hope that the US government loses the power to impose these sorts of controls in the first place.
The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all our customers to ensure compliance. Access to all other Claude models is not affected. We apologize for this disruption to our customers. We believe this is a misunderstanding and are working to restore access as soon as possible. Read our full statement: anthropic.com/news/fable-myt…

They will not make good policy because they are massively stupid and malicious and are not capable of it. The policy you will get is some combination of rancid culture war dogshit, incompetent flailing, and petty grifting.

We're obviously better off with Amodei, Altman, and Hassabis making the decisions than anyone in this administration, and I think Altman is a snake. But obviously multiple reference categories more intelligent than these fucking clowns.

Benchmarks are in kind of a tough spot, because if you come up with a benchmark that's actually good, it's a lot more valuable as an RL gym than it is a benchmark.

Introducing Claude Fable 5: a Mythos-class model that we’ve made safe for general use. Its capabilities exceed those of any model we’ve ever made generally available.

So far, my take on dieting is that the standard advice that exercise basically doesn't matter because it's easier to just eat less is a little bit wrong / incomplete. Eating a few hundred fewer calories is often a matter of cutting out soda, desserts, butter and mayo. Not too bad

You don't need to cut that much before cutting more becomes painful, either because of flavor and variety or hunger or both. And if you spend some time getting proficient at intense cardio, you can burn like 600 calories in an hour of running. That's an extra per diem burger.

I think for most people, these lines cross pretty quickly and the marginal calorie becomes easier to get rid of via exercise than eating a yet sparser diet.

wholebodylocomotion.github.i… In this work we explored how to repurpose terrain-aware human locomotion skills in a scalable and versatile way: like the action-free world model, we predict how humans will move online, and then let the humanoid track it with RL.

I go on a lot of late night walks, and most of the times I go out I end up walking through at least one nascent spider web. What this tells me is that the main force keeping the sidewalks clear is just human erosion. If the human density drops for a few hours, they start going up

If all the people went away, this place would look like a Spirit Halloween inside two weeks. You never see that in apocalypse media.

This thread is an interesting artifact. People living in an alternate universe where using an AI for book recommendations is obviously unhinged behavior with no conceivable value.
deeply bizarre behaviour in the bookshop today. dude came in and took a picture of each bay of books. then started talking into his phone: “hey, give me a book suggestion using these images and based of off what we talked about before”.

BREAKING: Google is planning to release 32 million mosquitoes across Florida and California. The company has asked the EPA for permission to proceed, with the public given until June 5 to respond. The mosquitoes are infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which stops them from reproducing and slowly collapses the wild population from within. Google's previous Debug Project trial in California's Central Valley nearly eliminated mosquitoes from three test sites entirely. A separate trial in Singapore cut dengue cases by 70% within 12 months. Google has now released over 1 billion mosquitoes across four continents. This new proposal is the largest deployment in US history.
