I am learning self-defence, but in that situation all I could do was curl up into a ball and protect myself. I couldn’t see exactly how many people there were, but it was enough for me to be hit from multiple sides while they were also taking my belongings.
The best thing I could do was protect my head, but even then I ended up with bruising.
In terms of security, I’m now trying to build up a trusted team around me so that I have support at these events. Looking back, I was naïve to think I could keep doing this without it.
It’s a real eye-opener when you find yourself in a situation where a crowd is encouraging the people attacking you rather than trying to stop it.
