Prof.
@EilishBurke15 is leading a pilot feasibility study at the Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability (TCAID) in collaboration with
@AnnePower_, Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Wexford Intellectual Disability Services, funded by
@NMPDUKilkenny and supported by Dr.
@JudyRyan22 , Director.
This study explores the use of the Echolight Bone Screening device, a portable bone health assessment system, as an alternative to DXA scanning for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With osteoporosis being a significant concern in this population, the research aims to address barriers to traditional bone health assessments and improve access to critical diagnostic tools.
Insights from the Intellectual Disability Supplement to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (
@IdsTilda) have highlighted inadequate attendance at diagnostic screenings among individuals with intellectual disabilities. This underscores the urgent need for innovative and accessible healthcare solutions.
This initiative represents a step forward in bridging gaps in bone health care and fostering equitable healthcare practices for those often underserved.
