🦴 World Osteoporosis Day 🦴 📣 Today, on World Osteoporosis Day, the Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability would like to take the opportunity to highlight the often-overlooked issue of osteoporosis among people with intellectual disability. The risk of osteoporosis and fractures can appear earlier for people with intellectual disability than in the general population. Unfortunately, this is frequently missed not only because osteoporosis develops insidiously, but also due to added challenges faced by people with intellectual disability such as communication difficulties, polypharmacy, and mobility limitations — especially among those with severe or profound intellectual disability. Traditional assessment methods like DXA scans are the gold standard but often inaccessible or unsuitable for many individuals with intellectual disability. 🔍 In collaboration with Ms. Anne Power (@AnnePower_ ), ANP Wexford Residential Intellectual Disability Service, TCAID and Prof. Eilish Burke (@EilishBurke15 ) has shown the feasibility of using the Echolight REMS device as an alternative screening tool. This innovation promises more inclusive, accessible bone health assessment for people with intellectual disabilities. 🎥 Please view our video telling you more about the project and hear from our PPI contributors 👉 youtu.be/arz2b8K4nAc?si=rIMD… 📄 You can also read the full report here 👉 tcd.ie/tcaid/assets/pdf/each… 🧠 On this day, let’s raise awareness and advocate for tailored approaches to bone health screening and care for this vulnerable group. @TCD_SNM @EcholightSpa @IrishOsteo @HSELive @roinnslainte @DeptCDE

Delighted to collaborate with @EilishBurke15 on this important research identifying the feasibility of Echolight in people with intellectual disabilities. Her support, knowledge and leadership has been outstanding ⭐️
Prof. @EilishBurke15 is leading a pilot feasibility study at the Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability (TCAID) in collaboration with @AnnePower_, Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Wexford Intellectual Disability Services, funded by @NMPDUKilkenny and supported by Dr. @JudyRyan22 , Director. This study explores the use of the Echolight Bone Screening device, a portable bone health assessment system, as an alternative to DXA scanning for individuals with intellectual disabilities. With osteoporosis being a significant concern in this population, the research aims to address barriers to traditional bone health assessments and improve access to critical diagnostic tools. Insights from the Intellectual Disability Supplement to The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (@IdsTilda) have highlighted inadequate attendance at diagnostic screenings among individuals with intellectual disabilities. This underscores the urgent need for innovative and accessible healthcare solutions. This initiative represents a step forward in bridging gaps in bone health care and fostering equitable healthcare practices for those often underserved. #InclusiveHealth #BoneHealth #IntellectualDisability #ResearchInnovation #TCAID #TrinityCollegeDublin @TCD_SNM @MccarrmMary @bonehealthBHO
