The Trump administration’s DOJ is seeking the names, addresses, banking details, and other personal identifying information of multiple users on social media platforms X and Reddit who are critical of ICE. These actions are a blatant attempt to intimidate and unmask critics of the administration exercising their First Amendment rights.
As libertarians, we hold that free expression and privacy are fundamental rights. The state does not own its people's words, thoughts, and data. Anonymous speech has shielded dissenters throughout American history, and no administration should wield federal power to chill criticism of its agencies.
This action fits a bipartisan pattern of surveillance and intimidation by the administrative state. Free speech and privacy must remain unrestricted from state intimidation.
The government’s core function is to protect its citizens' rights, and it has no right to target citizens for dissenting speech.
