“Prediction markets cannot use federal loopholes to bypass state consumer protection, sports gaming, and gambling laws. By joining this brief, we are standing firmly with Ohio and our state partners to ensure that federal commodities laws are not weaponized to evade state laws, fuel gambling addiction, and undermine state revenue.” oag.ca.gov/news/press-releas…

“A back-of-the-envelope calculation indicates that legalization of #sportsgambling in nine states resulted in an additional 284,000 food-insufficient households and $130.2 million in excess healthcare expenditures annually”
In the NBERs this week beyond that smartphone/fertility study, some bad news: Adding to the body of research about negative impacts of sports gambling, it is literally taking food out of peoples' mouths. nber.org/papers/w35305

Interesting write-up by @HarryDCrane: estimation that offshore prediction market betting could represent 12-30% of #predictionmarket activity in the US. More work needed here… who’s got the best methods for analyzing this space?
Research Brief: Estimating U.S. User Activity in Offshore Prediction Markets Key Findings: - $ 11-27B of Polymarket volume May 2025-April 2026 is attributed to U.S. users - $ 11-34B of all offshore volume came from U.S. users Full report below: cranezeng.com/prediction-mar…

But don’t worry @aosipovich… they’ll ask operators with a “pretty please” that they hold off listing the contract 😂
Interesting nugget in the CFTC's proposal on prediction markets: the agency says it can only block an event contract on public-interest grounds AFTER it's been listed. So it seems like markets can offer war, terrorism, etc. contracts for 90 days while the CFTC reviews them.

Sports betting legalization is linked to a 10.5% decline in household food sufficiency among active bettors, according to a study from the National Bureau of Economic Research. "Sports betting revenues are concentrated geographically, with New York accounting for roughly one-third of all state collections and New York and Illinois together generating nearly half. #Knicks content 🤝 @Arnold_Ventures’ commitment to decreasing sports betting harms here for the crossover!
Prediction market operators want you to see a NYC bar hedging a Knicks promo and think "financial tool." But with sports betting exceeding $160 billion last year and almost none of it tied to actual hedging, the framing doesn't hold up. AV Co-Founder @JohnArnold in @CNBC: cnbc.com/2026/06/03/kalshi-w…
