Welcome to our new series, “Listening to the Universe,” where we explore techniques and tools to better understand the universe and our place in it. Hosted by Athena Brensberger @Astroathens, we will post a weekly video for the next 8 weeks highlighting the various SETI Institute scientists and their research. So tune in every week to learn something new about how we “listen” to the universe! youtube.com/shorts/F_KcdJJB9…

Did you know that one teaspoon of a neutron star would weigh about 6 billion tons? Neutron stars are incredibly dense remnants of massive stars that have exploded in supernovae.

Quick note: 6 billion tons is the upper limit based on the estimated density of a neutron star. The average limit may be closer to 2 billion tons. (Just did the math on threads lol)

A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus! It takes 243 Earth days to rotate once, but only 225 Earth days to orbit the Sun. #SpaceFacts 🌞🌏⚪️(my version of Venus)

Feast your eyes on this: the moment @fireflyspace’s Blue Ghost lunar lander touched down on the Moon’s surface.
Watch Firefly land on the Moon! After identifying surface hazards and selecting a safe landing site, #BlueGhost landed directly over the target in Mare Crisium. A historic moment on March 2 we'll never forget. We have Moon dust on our boots! #BGM1

Experts believe it’s only a matter of time until we find intelligent extraterrestrial life. With new tools and technologies, we search more of the cosmos every day. But what happens when we detect ET? Vote for our #SXSW2025 PanelPicker proposal here: buff.ly/3M10Bz1 @sxsw

I tweeted a tweet about Science! I read the article myself, and wrote the tweet myself and posted it myself. 🥹🥹🥹 I haven't been able to do anything like that for a year and a half. 😭 It only took me three days lol. But I did it.
Why is this cool?? Because it’s one step closer to making a new element - unbinilium - which would be the heaviest element ever synthesized. What’s cool? Scientist at Berkeley found a new way to make Livermorium (an element with 116 protons! So, just 4 protons away from Unbinilium) by putting titanium-50 in a cyclotron for 22 days and smashing it into another atom. And with all that energy, they only got out two atoms of Livermorium. 😅 Yes, this was tweeted by Dianna! futureleap.org/2024/08/moder…

On 13 April 2029, five years from today, the asteroid Apophis will pass so close to Earth that it will be visible to the naked eye. Any chance of impact has been ruled out, but its close approach will offer a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for science and public outreach 👇🔗esa.int/Space_Safety/Planeta…
