As an astronaut, If I could change one thing it would be people's perception of spaceflight. I think it is seen too often as a distant, flashy endeavour - cool, but not relevant, and that could not be further from the truth! The science conducted in space leads to medical and technical advancements that benefit everyone. Most people don't realize the ripple effect of space research that sparks innovation, jobs and solutions that range from cancer treatments to your smartphone's camera!

I’m excited that preorders are available for my new book “Air Born: Artistic Musings of a WWII Pilot and POW”. It contains my father’s POW Wartime log (with annotations by me) and all 97 of the PENNY cartoons he drew for the Stalag Luft III newspaper. Ballastbooks.com/purchase/ai…

Borders and divisions vanish when you look down on Earth from space, serving as a reminder that we are all part of a global community sharing a common home. As access to space begins to open to a broader audience, I am hopeful we can begin to focus less on our divisions and more on our commonality as human beings.

Love what you've done with the space...
Two women flew on STS-47 in September 1992: @AuburnU alumna Jan Davis (left) and the first African-American woman to go to space, Dr. Mae Jemison. The two crewmates are shown here working on a physiology experiment in the Spacelab laboratory module aboard space shuttle Endeavour.

It will be nice to have my father’s plane (B-17) and mine (Space Shuttle Discovery) side by side at Udvar-Hazy!
Look what just arrived at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center! The fuselage and wings of the B-17 "Shoo Shoo Shoo Baby" will be on view at the Udvar-Hazy Center as it awaits assembly and permanent display.

True for me as well - these six ladies were my inspiration to become an astronaut. Sally’s ride 40 years ago today made it real. Thank you Rhea, Anna, Kathy, and Shannon - now friends. RIP Sally and Judy.
Today is the 40th anniversary of Sally Ride’s first flight into space! She and the rest of the women selected in that first class of female astronauts changed my dream of becoming an astronaut into a goal. Thank you all for the inspiration.

Just eight people have reached Challenger Deep, the ocean's deepest point. More than 550 people have visited space. But only one person has done both: Kathy Sullivan. #OTD we celebrate her success and achievement. 👏 #WomenInSTEM
