"Person with autism" is the language of the disability rights movement (DRM) and all our disability legislation - legacy to be proud of.
"Autistic" is identity.
I claim use both as positive usages, as proud of both legacies.

These people had to eat locusts to curb their hunger.
War in Sudan has put nearly 5 million people on the brink of starvation ā and only 5% of the country can afford a meal a day.
The coiner her(?)self says she meant for it to be an umbrella term for any brain divergent from the norm, incl bc of trauma-related mental illness, brain injuries, neurodegenerative disorders, etc. in this post responding to exactly this misconception š:

This is the most utilised intervention in Irish adult disability services.
- Thereās no evidence behind its efficacy

- Itās based on the same ideologies of conversion therapy
- Itās a treatment used on people without their consent
My first issue with EIBI was a safety concern.
Is this just training my kid to behave in a certain way to please adults?
Am I opening a door for my child to be manipulated by adults?
He's Autistic. Social cues are already difficult. Blindly trusting adults is a nightmare.
One remarkable parent battling a dreadful system that opened the gates to and is now dominated by ABA.
A wonderful advocate for their autistic kid and wider.
PRT, PBS whatever it is called it is still ABA, the same goals, same false premisses.
Thread.

My kid's teachers let me know earlier this week that the EIBI program would be by to assess him.
I let it happen. I figured when they tried to line up my kids name with a file, they'd see that it doesn't exist.
Because I fought my guts out for it to never exist.
Parents of autistic children understand that they are being scrutinised. The way they seek input from autistic adults and the lengths they go to to find autistic people whose struggles relate to their children's struggles reflect how they want society to treat their children.
Iām going to start posting some of the ridiculous targets I see in #OT#SLT#EdPsychology reports.
These will be shared with permission only and will be anonād
I hope this raises awareness of the #Trauma that #Autistic#SEN children are being faced with every day as āsupportā š§µ
The problem with being single and not wanting to date is that people think they're entitled to an explanation. So for convenience, you end up being tempted to lie, just to get them off your back. But that also means living inauthentically.
And they want me to fit into a category so that they have a clue how to approach the quandary: Are you a lesbian? Do you identify as nonbinary? (As though that makes a difference?) Do you see yourself as asexual?
Why do I need to answer questions like these? Why?
There's not a lot of research on potassium-related sensory overload in autistic people specifically (even though genes associated with hypokalaemic periodic paralysis, which also involves sensory overload) are also associated with autism...
After Christmas I drove 9 hrs to visit my mother who is in a nursing home. Was told just before visiting that she tested positive for Covid/ was isolated. Without seeing my mother, I drove 9 hrs back home.
Ask me again why Iām āobsessedā with masking in healthcare settings⦠š”
The nursing home is in crisis mode because so many staff are out sick. And this isnāt asymptomatic people āwithā COVID- because the staff donāt actually have to test, or even stay home if symptomatic.
The staff are literally too sick to work. š¤¦š½āāļø
People act like taking measures to prevent and/ or mitigate covid in health care facilities and nursing homes will lead to unnecessary isolation and neglect. But my mother is literally isolated and not receiving normal care, because of FAILURE to prevent/ mitigate covid. š¤Æ
Not all behavior is communication, & everyone from autistic advocates to professionals to researchers who neglects to learn about & understand the lived experiences of nonspeakers with severe apraxia & motor disinhibition are causing harm, no matter how "trauma-informed" you are.
