The term "Christian" was imposed on the early Church entirely by outsiders. They considered themselves a sect of Jews who accepted the Messiah had come. That's why St. John the Divine refers to "Jews who say they are Jews but are not Jews." Early Christians viewed themselves as the true form of Judaism, not an offshoot separate religion.
