The BC Law Enforcement Memorial coincides w/ the Canadian Police & Peace Officer Memorial recognized annually on the last Sunday in Sep to remember our fallen.
On 24APR1960, @SaanichPolice Cst Robert Norman Barry KIRBY was called to attend Colquitz Provincial Mental Home (now #VIRCC) to look for Raymond Harold, a deaf-mute patient who’d broken into 2 buildings, stolen 2 rifles ~100 rounds of ammunition, & fired @ unarmed staff. 1/4
Harold escaped the area & shot a psychiatric nurse in the shoulder. Fortunately the nurse survived.
A short while later, Harold was shot in the leg by Cst MYCOCK, & surrendered.
He never stood trial, due to his mental state. 3/4
#OTD 1961 @BCRCMP Lytton Det Cst Ronald Arthur EKSTROM died during a high-speed chase on #BCHwy12.
Whilst pursuing a speeding 1954 Monarch convertible, he swerved to avoid a car coming onto the hwy, 1 mile north of #Lytton.
He lost control of his police cruiser, which went /3
over a steep embankment and slammed into a tree 200 yards down the slope. He was thrown from the cruiser and hurled into a tree, killing him instantly.
EKSTROM was 22 years old.
The subsequent Coroner's inquest recommended all #RCMP cars be equipped with safety belts. 2/3
#OTD in 2006, @AbbyPoliceDept Cst John David GOYER passed away.
He’d responded to a threats call in #Abbotsford on 26SEP2001, for a man threatening to kill a woman if she left their relationship.
During arrest, the suspect violently assaulted GOYER about the head. 1/3
GOYER was never able to return to work, as his condition deteriorated. Drs diagnosed #ALS.
WorkSafeBC concluded it was directly related to the fight & his employment as a police officer.
Despite his health declining rapidly, he remained positive, determined and courageous. 2/3
He died in hospital, surrounded by friends & family on 19APR2006.
Cst John David GOYER was born in Montreal, buried in #Courtenay.
In 8yrs as an #AbbyPD police officer, he carried out his duties with distinction & quiet dignity.

On 14APR1900, #Steveston Municipal Police Chief Cst Alexander (Sandy) D MAIN set off with his dog, to search shacks about a mile from town.
He’d been tipped off 3 residents were responsible for thefts in area & had stolen property.
But when he arrived, suspect Yip Luck killed 1/3
MAIN & his dog with a brush hook.
Luck threatened to kill the other 2 if they didn't help dispose of the bodies.
When MAIN didn’t return home, his worried wife called their friend, Det Thomas WYLIE @VancouverPD.
He led 2 days of intense searching til the bodies were discovered 2/
On 22SEP1987, @vicpdcanada Cst Ian Douglas JORDAN was to have finished nightshift, but was still @ HQ on Fisgard St, when an alarm call was received.
His cruiser out front, JORDAN drove towards Douglas.
K9 Cst Ole JORGENSON also responded, southbound on Douglas & "called for 1/4
His head struck the car's interior rollbar; he was rendered comatose; remaining in hospital until he died 11APR2018, from the traumatic injuries sustained on duty 30yrs previous.

#OTD in 2000, @deltapolice Cst Mark NIEUWENHUIS was called to #TilburyIsland Industrial Park for a report of drag racing.
Arriving on his police motorcycle, he tried to pull over a black Corvette for questioning.
When the car sped off, NIEUWENHUIS took up the pursuit. 1/4
but NIEUWENHUIS died shortly after arriving at Royal Columbian Hospital in #NewWest.
The suspect vehicle was never located.
A married father of 3 young children, Cst Mark NIEUWENHUIS was born in #NewWestminster, and buried in Valleyview Cemetery, #Surrey. 3/4
