Today is National Threatened Species Day. We draw attention to the Regent Honeyeater, a Blue Mountains bird who has become critically endangered due to extensive habitat loss attributed to land clearing for agriculture and residential use. Photo: Dean Ingwersen

They appear to defy rules of physics in their existence. Unique land cover results in water being directed such that vegetation grows on the sides of the mountains. Over millennia, the vegetation decomposes and creates nutrient rich peat, which serves as a foundation for swamps.

The Wollemi pine is a critically endangered tree, previously thought to be extinct. Its discovery was considered a major scientific and heritage discovery and was a key reason why the Blue Mountains was granted world heritage status by @UNESCO in 2000. ​​bit.ly/3PFmVRy
