🚨🎙️💣 | Roy Keane BLASTS referee decision on FC Barcelona and player behavior of Madrid stars Bellingham & Vinicius Jnr
🗣️“Look, I’m sick to death of these modern referees wanting to be the star of the show. It’s a disgrace. You’ve got a high-stakes match, players competing, and you’re handing out red cards like they’re party invitations. Do me a favour. It’s a contact sport, or at least it used to be before these officials started over-analysing every little bit of contact on a monitor.
I’ve watched it back a few times now, and I’ve got to say, that red card decision against FC Barcelona against Atlético Madrid is absolutely shocking. It’s never a sending-off. The lad’s gone for the ball, there’s no malice there, no intent to hurt anyone. It’s soft, it’s harsh, and it completely changes the flow of the game. You don’t send a player off for that, not at this level, not in a game of this magnitude.
It’s a poor decision, plain and simple, and it’s ruined what should have been a proper game of football. You’re punishing a team for actually trying to defend. Barcelona, whatever you think about them, are a top side. They want to play football, they want to entertain, and decisions like that ruin the spectacle. Fans don’t come to watch referees, they come to watch top players express themselves, and tonight that decision has taken away from what should have been a proper contest.
Now, on the other side of things, and this is just as bad in a different way, I’m looking at what went on between Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham in that game against Bayern Munich, and I’ve got no time for it. None whatsoever.
What are they doing? You’ve got two of the most talented players in the world, and they’re spending more time squaring up and barking at each other than actually playing the game. It’s all ego, it’s ‘look at me, I’m the big man.’ Get on with it. You’re there to do a job for your team, not to engage in some choreographed playground spat for the cameras.
All this nonsense, arguing, telling each other to be quiet, waving arms about, what does that achieve? It shows a lack of respect, a lack of composure, and more importantly, it disrupts the team. You cannot win big trophies if your dressing room is like that on the pitch. Simple as that.
In my day, if you had a problem with someone, you dealt with it properly. You let your football do the talking, or you won the game to shut them up. Now it’s all finger-pointing and shouting matches. It’s embarrassing. They need a reality check. You’re representing two of the biggest clubs in history, show some class, show some maturity, and stop acting like spoilt brats.
Top players will always have big egos, I understand that, but the best teams manage it. They channel it in the right direction. What I’m seeing there is frustration boiling over and turning into division, and once that creeps in, you’re in trouble.
So yes, Barcelona have been hard done by tonight against Atlético Madrid, no doubt about it. But when I look at that behaviour from those two, it’s pathetic. Focus on the ball, not the TikTok highlights of you acting tough. Because all that nonsense doesn’t win you matches, and it certainly doesn’t win you respect.”
