To celebrate #worldcoleopteraweekend here's the two most recent additions to the #BritishScarabs list. Both established introductions - Checkered chafer (Valgus hemipterus) & Striped Summer Chafer (Rhizotrogus aestivus)

Looks like the woodland dor beetle Anoplotrupes stercorosus.

This is how dung beetles emerge on a well stocked farm that uses very few wormers. Any parasites laid in this pat wouldn't stand a chance. This is Ireland yesterday.

Hello scarab followers. Just to let you know that we will be quiet for the next couple of days - Ceri heading to hospital for an op. Keep the records & questions coming though. We will answer as soon as possible.

This is Cetonia aurata, the rose chafer (goldglรคnzender Rosenkรคfer)! This beetle is a protected species in Germany, and their larvae are important detritivores. They are out flying this time of year to mate.

Spot on with the ID. There have been a couple of records so far, just starting to emerge. If you could submit to @iRecordWildlife that would be brilliant.

Yes, I would say this is a Garden chafer, P. horticola. I haven't seen one yet but they should be just showing. Can't see all features, but it is nice and hairy.

Pine chafer - Polyphylla fullo - taking off after a spell in a moth trap. Very rarely seen in the UK, I think the last sighting was in Rutland in 2014. Camargue June 2019. #NaturePhotography @bernoid @Britnatureguide

That excited expression of wonderment just about sums it up for many of us. If we are lucky we get to make that face at least once a month!

This marvellous Maybug flew into the office to say hello to Ranger Kate earlier this week! You'll most likely spot this type of beetle, also known as a Cockchafer or Doodlebug, in areas such as parks, gardens, grassland, and woodland, as they search for a mate this month.

It's May & Maybugs abound. Thanks to all those who have submitted their sightings to @iRecordWildlife we have a much better map of their distribution patterns. The cockchafer verified dataset on @iRecordWildlife is nearly as large as the @NBNAtlas. Great job recorders!

Acrossus luridus has many colour forms including all black. Here's how to distinguish the black form from Acrossus depressus #ScarabSkills

These lads are the unfortunately named Cockchafer beetle or Maybug & there are going to be LOADS of them about over the next few weeks for their breeding season. They are one of our bigger beetle species and are often mistaken for cockroaches... BUT they are native & harmless.
