The choice to use his mother’s surname and not his father’s surname is generally due to integration. Since they were moving permanently to Japan, it only made sense to use that surname. In Japan, family registration and daily life strongly favor Japanese surnames for smoother integration, schooling, legal matters, and obtaining/affirming Japanese citizenship (which he holds). If they remained in US or moved to Ghana, he probably would have used his father’s surname, I assume. Anyways, he went through Urawa Red Diamonds’ academy before going on loan in Belgium and then established himself at Parma in the Italian Serie A.
