Delighted to share that our paper, “Analysis of Coach and Athletic Director Turnover in the Florida School System,” has been published in the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching. It is freely available to read, and I hope it will be a discussion topic for those in positions to make a difference. In this study, Dr Simon Quick and I examined turnover among athletic directors, assistant athletic directors, head coaches, and assistant coaches in Florida middle and high schools over a three-year period. Using statewide administrative data from 2021 to 2024, we examined whether school sport personnel remained in their positions or were replaced over time. The results were striking. Some of the key findings include: ➡️ Turnover increased significantly across every major school sport role we examined, including athletic directors, assistant athletic directors, head coaches, and assistant coaches. ➡️ Athletic director turnover rose from 20.57% to 48.70% over the three-year period. ➡️ Head coach turnover across the sports studied increased from 23.67% to 51.82%. ➡️ Assistant coach turnover rose from 24.42% to 56.77%. ➡️ Football had the highest overall turnover rate by the end of the study period, while baseball showed the greatest proportional increase. ➡️ By the end of the study, turnover exceeded half of all coaching positions examined. The practical meaning is clear: school sport systems are facing a serious workforce stability issue. When coaches and athletic administrators leave at high rates, schools are not simply replacing names in a directory. They are rebuilding relationships, expectations, systems, culture, and continuity for student-athletes. This matters because school sport is supposed to support education, development, belonging, leadership, and positive relationships. Those goals become harder to sustain when programs are constantly replacing the adults who lead them. Ultimately, this paper argues that turnover in school sport is not just an employment issue. It is a student-centered issue. If we want stable, educationally meaningful athletic programs, then we need to invest more seriously in the people who lead them. If you're a coach or could forward this to a coach, we'd value your participation in a couple of studies our center is conducting: Coach Swearing Study – investigates whether coaches use profanity and why/why not. - fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/S… Coach Use of AI – investigates whether coaches use AI and why/why not. - fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/S… Thanks!

With summer for coaches, we must develop just as we expect our athletes to develop. I’m a better coach because of earning my Master’s in Athletic Coaching from @FloridaState! The faculty led by Dr. Tim @Baghurst is first class! Best investment I’ve made in coaching! Link below👇

The most authentic way to replicate real game situations in practice is to simulate real game situations. Looking forward to seeing donuts and trash cans included in the first game of the season...
Who knew we don’t need people in practice, just big donuts and a trash can. How is this what pro coaches do….. it’s literally garbage.

85% of the over 1,500 FL coaches who responded to our FSU Center for Athletic Coaching survey on the impact of SB 538 said they receive no compensation for offseason workouts. Will this change with the new bill? We're still collecting data, and there is a lot more yet to analyze. @BLester1993 @larryblustein @VarsityBuddy @OS_ChrisHays @JonSantucci @FernandezAndreC @DBWilson2 @ABLichtenstein @ChrisBoyleDBNJ @BKempRecruiting @CoreyDavisNFD @CFreemanJAX @HaysCarlyon @JStCyrTV @MiaOBrienTV @BrentASJax @flasportsbuzz @davehydesports @BianchiWrites @gregcote @tomdangelo44 @schadjoe @TomWJones @DavidEWhitley @MBakerTBTimes @ByTimReynolds @APMarkLong @osiliana @philiprr_OMD @Erik_Erlendsson @ColbyDGuy @PayFLCoaches @FACACoach

Coaches are still voicing their opinions about the recent legislation concerning stipends. If you coach in the FL school system, whether public or private, have you shared your thoughts? We're almost at 2,500 responses, but there are 20,000 coaches. fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/S… @FACACoach @PayFLCoaches @FIAAANews

Key senators strike bipartisan deal on sweeping college sports reform with transfer, eligibility, and cap enforcement. A bipartisan Senate proposal from Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell would make major changes to college sports. Among them: restore a one-time transfer rule, allow waivers when coaches leave, or other circumstances arise, establish a five-year eligibility cap, restrict professional athletes from entering college competition, create enforceable compensation caps, require NIL deals to reflect fair market value rather than disguised pay-for-play, limit agent fees to 5%, and create national standards for athlete representation. The bill would also prohibit coaches from leaving for another job before the season ends and prevent schools from hiring a coach away before that coach’s season concludes. It would preempt conflicting state NIL laws, provide a limited antitrust safe harbor, protect health insurance and scholarships, support women’s and Olympic sports, and explore media-rights changes to generate more revenue across college athletics. sports.yahoo.com/college-foo…

The standards are rising! In order to qualify for the men's 100m athletes have to break 10 secs. And the marathon. Wow!
