What makes a great #neurosurgeon? We set out to answer this question with season four of Barrow Neurosurgery Base Camp. Today, we're bringing you our 10th "trait of greatness" with the season finale: "On Tenacity." “I think I’ve always just called myself stubborn,” said Anna Huguenard, MD, who trained at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute as a cerebrovascular and skull base fellow. “Whether you call that stubbornness or tenacity, that willingness to just keep coming back is so important to actually becoming a master.” In the season finale, Barrow #neurosurgery faculty and trainees share personal stories of unwavering determination and reflect on what drives them to keep going—even on the most challenging days. You’ll also get to hear from the following special guests: -Fred G. Barker II, MD, Director of Cranial Base Surgery, @MassGeneralNews -Richard G. Ellenbogen, MD, FACS, Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery, @UWMedicine -Kevin T. Foley, MD, Chair, @SemmesMurphey Clinic -@AdamArthurMD, Neurosurgeon, Semmes Murphey Clinic; Chief Medical Officer, @Medtronic -@DanielYoshor, MD, Chair, Department of Neurosurgery, @PennMedicine To watch the season finale, visit BarrowNeuro.org/BaseCamp. Thank you for tuning into season four of #BarrowNeurosurgeryBaseCamp. We’re excited to announce that season five is underway, thanks to an educational grant from Medtronic. We look forward to our new theme: the creative mind. In the meantime, remember our 10 traits of greatness: 1. Humility 2. Ambition 3. Equanimity 4. Strategic Thinking 5. Teamwork 6. Empathy 7. Passion 8. Courage 9. Integrity 10. Tenacity

As part of the Seventh @worldpdcongress, the #MuhammadAliParkinsonCenter at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute was proud to co-host a celebration for the #PedaltoPhoenix cyclists. After riding across the country, more than 50 cyclists arrived at the @phoenixconctr. The teams traveled from Seattle, Salt Lake City, Chicago, and other locations to raise awareness for #Parkinsonsdisease and demonstrate the power of exercise, resilience, and community. The celebration marked an inspiring start to #WPC2026, which welcomed clinicians, scientists, patients, and care partners for four days of workshops, presentations, and connection.

What does basketball have to do with brain surgery? As someone who has built careers in both, #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute #neurosurgery resident Alexander Greven, MD, MBA, shared his insights in a @TEDxBrownU talk. But even if your dreams don't involve professional sports or medicine, Dr. Greven's takeaways will inspire your next steps—no matter how untraditional they may seem. Can an #occipitalnerveblock be the #migraine "timeout" you need? @MigraineAgain recently published an article on this topic, enlisting the expertise of headache #neurologist Jennifer Robblee, MD, who works in the #LewisHeadacheCenter at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute. Dr. Robblee was the lead author on the 2025 @ahsheadache guidelines for treating acute migraine in the emergency department. Published in @HeadacheJournal these updated guidelines classified greater occipital nerve blocks (GONB) as a "Level A - Must Offer" treatment. “GONB is a safe procedure that acts quickly, often in minutes, and does not cause sedation like many IV medications, allowing you to return to function quickly," Dr. Robblee told MigraineAgain. "There are also few contraindications. It can be used in pregnant patients or those with complex comorbidities without concern for interactions with other medications." Congratulations to Sandane Chauke-Korae, MD, on completing her neurology observership with #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute! Dr. Chauke-Korae received funding from the Franke Global #NeuroscienceEducation Center to travel to Barrow in #Phoenix, #Arizona, from Johannesburg, South Africa, and spend a month learning from attending neurologists across multiple subspecialties. She was interested in Barrow because of the opportunity to observe world-class subspecialty #neurology care, noting that general neurology is the norm in South Africa. She feels particularly drawn to vascular neurology but is also fascinated by movement disorders and epilepsy. Dr. Chauke-Korae first learned about the Franke International #VisitingScholars and #ClinicalObservership Program when the #BarrowGlobalNeurology team, led by Huiam Mubarak, MD, visited Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, where Dr. Chauke-Korae was undergoing residency training at the time. Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital serves as the primary teaching hospital of @WitsUniversity Medical School, which has a formal partnership with Barrow and is where Dr. Chauke-Korae earned her medical degree. "My time at Barrow has been incredibly enriching and enlightening," she said. "It's broadened my perspective to what's possible. The physicians here are quite committed to providing excellence and to creating solutions for their patients on a daily basis. It's quite inspiring. I feel quite privileged to have had this opportunity." Learn more about observerships at Barrow by https://visiting bar.rw/observers.
