The name “Somali” has, tragically, become synonymous with dysfunction, fraud, and lawlessness in many parts of the world not because of the identity itself, but because of the relentless degradation inflicted upon it by Somalia and those who claim to represent it.
From the era of piracy off the Horn of Africa to the harboring of terrorist networks, the global image of “Somali” has been systematically eroded. And the damage didn’t stop at sea. In Western nations, Somalians from Somalia linked fraud scandals involving stolen aid, food stamp abuse, exploitation of refugee systems, and multimillion-dollar financial scams have further dragged the name through the mud. The most recent disgrace? Half of an official Somalia government delegation vanishing during an international labor summit in Switzerland. Whether it was corruption, human smuggling, or another form of organized fraud, the message is the same, Somalia has no control, no credibility, and no shame. Another humiliating episode added to a long, tattered list.
This isn’t just incompetence, it’s a culture. A culture of impunity, mediocrity, and self-enrichment that has taken root in Somalia’s political system. Instead of treating international representation as a sacred national duty, Somalia officials have turned it into a hustle, cheapening not only their state’s name but the wider Somali identity shared by millions.
In stark contrast, the Republic of Somaliland and its citizens have consistently embodied values of responsibility, integrity, and global citizenship. Whether in diplomacy, commerce, academia, or diaspora communities, Somalilanders have shown the world that the Somali identity can stand for excellence, honesty, and contribution. But this distinction is constantly overshadowed by the reckless conduct of a neighboring regime that cannot even keep track of its own delegates.
This is not just a political failure, it is a moral collapse. Somalia has not only failed its own people but has exported its dysfunction across borders, staining the name “Somali” on the world stage.
The international community must wake up to this reality, there is a clear and undeniable distinction between those who uphold the Somali identity with honor, and those who betray it with every scandal, scam, and spectacle. The Republic of Somaliland stands firmly in the former category. Its people are the true custodians of Somali dignity, professionalism, and pride.
For those who don’t yet know, Somaliland exists. It is real. It is responsible. And it deserves to be recognized for what it represents and for what it has preserved, even as others drag our shared name through the dirt.
