My latest in @TheNationalNews. The emerging US–Iran framework may reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but it does not resolve the wider regional conflict. Lebanon remains caught between Iran and Israel, facing occupation, displacement, economic collapse, and the risk of a prolonged war. Any serious effort at regional de-escalation must include Lebanon--as well as Syria and Gaza. #Lebanon #Israel #Iran #MiddleEast #Hezbollah #StraitOfHormuz #USIran #Diplomacy #Geopolitics thenationalnews.com/opinion/…

My first thoughts @TheEconomist on the MOU. We should recall the events that led America and Iran to war in the first place: the failure of two previous rounds of nuclear talks, and the mass protests fuelled by Iran's economic crisis. The MOU addresses neither of these issues. It leaves the nuclear dispute to be settled in a future round of negotiations, which may not succeed either. And while it provides Iran with some short-term sanctions relief, that is hardly sufficient to pull its economy back from the abyss. This won't be an acceptable status quo forever, for either side. The risk of a stripped-down deal that purports to end the conflict between America and Iran is that doesn't actually end the conflict after all. economist.com/middle-east-an…

The Iranian Regime survives. But in your opinion, what will the long-term legacy of this war be?
0% Regime will be Diminished
100% Regime will be Stronger

The Case that the regime will be weakened was best made in @newlinesmag by @hxhassan: In summary, the Iranian Regime will be weakened like Saddam was after the first Gulf War, and will deteriorate slowly into an eventual implosion: newlinesmag.com/essays/the-t…

"Let's not blow it"
‼️ Trump : This morning’s attack on Beirut should not have happened, particularly on a special day when we are so close to a Peace Deal with Iran. Israel has the right to defend itself against threats, but the attack it was responding to was very small and meaningless, nobody was hurt, injured, or killed, and should not disrupt this important process. We are very close to a Deal that will bring peace to the region, including to Lebanon, and all sides should stand down. There should be no more attacks by Israel anywhere in Lebanon, but there should also be no more attacks by any other party, including Hezbollah, against Israel. This could be the beginning of a long and beautiful peace — Let’s not blow it!

The dilemma with Iran is whether paying off the mafia is cheaper than fighting it.
Looks like it is #Jordan’s turn tonight. Does #Tehran want to keep any goodwill with any of its #Arab neighbors? Or it has given up totally on having working relations with any #Arab government? At this rate, I cannot think of how #Iran can be integrated in the region.

Meanwhile, some grace and beauty.

Mada Airways, a new Lebanese commercial airline, is preparing to enter the market, coinciding with the expiry earlier this year of MEA’s long-standing exclusivity over Lebanon’s local aviation market. The carrier, sister company of IBEX Air Charter, is awaiting its license and the rehabilitation of Qleiaat Airport, from which it plans to operate exclusively.
