The latest issue of the South African Historical Journal is finally online. Available on the link below, the issue features a wide range of articles that reflect the high-quality scholarship on South Africa and the southern African region that historians continue to generate. tandfonline.com/toc/rshj20/7… The focus of these articles range from the rural politics of South Africa’s transition to democracy and the history of boxing in Cape Town to the approximately 5000 German men who were interned as ‘enemy aliens’ in South Africa during the Second World War. In the wake of the devastating fire that destroyed the Jagger Library at the University of Cape Town in April 2021, it is perhaps appropriate that the issue carries an article that provides an overview of digital archival projects and online databases developed by scholars and archival practitioners in South Africa since the early 1990s. Some observers often wonder how the Ian Smith regime in then Southern Rhodesia managed to survive the onslaught of sanctions imposed by the United Nations and Britain following its Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965.
