If we fail to improve the salaries and prospects in academia today, tomorrow, there will be no such thing as a post-PhD academia. Fewer and fewer bright minds will hold a professor position. The net result is a decline in quality of scientific training. Country-specific.

How to prevent waste of time for PhD students and devaluation of the PhD: 1) two first-author research papers to graduate with a PhD, or get Master's to exit. 2) it should be PI's responsibility to keep the median PhD length in their lab = 5 years. 3) abolish dissertation.

minds referencing moaning on social media without having realistic experience/information on a specific issue. Complaining about academia on social media (and thus pushing away young scientists) while actively benefiting from the training etc that it gives sounds unfair to me 2/2
