I'm always working on about 10 things related to #astronuclear engineering, rotating habitats, and #futurism in general, but I'm severely limited in time due to the fact that I've got bills to pay. Consider helping me create more! patreon.com/beyondnerva

Awesome photos of KIWI-A! H/t @MrBeamJockey

Oh wow, looks like it was in fact Jack. Here he is with the scientists (playing horseshoes according to the note) and with his camera.

A wonderful example of the sort of outreach the AEC and NASA did as part of the 60s and 70s astronuclear programs! SNAP 3 went to Brazil for an international science conference as well!

Not just PhD... We're on year 5 of my wife's MS. A large part of the issues I gave is that she's the professional, I'm the (overly credentialed) hobbyist. We couldn't support ourselves in her school's hometown, do she can't even knock on the door and say "hey." We're in limbo.
Just going to put it here that writing up is part of a PhD. PhD students are not paid for 3 years lab work and then around as unpaid labour until they submit their thesis. I understand the constraints of grant funding but institutions need to step in to stop these practices

I don't even know when we're moving, or to what REGION of the country. It's been like this for years. All of this is bc edits COVID being a 4 hr drive from campus lack of support... bc you can't make a living in Morgantown. Academia sucks...

Not just for the scholastic academic (bc that's what's expected these days) but for their family. There's a lot broken here, not just financially. The divorce rate for grad students within 5 years of graduation (post, and 1 year pre initial expected date) is insane FOR A REASON.

So... Neutron activated compliant mechanisms as baseline neutron control systems. Realistic or not? On a theoretical level, and if you feel like spitballing ideas I'm all for it. Related to a few ideas I've been mulling over for a future blog post

Looks like they haven't given up on the Brayton cycle yet... the changes in the thermal management architecture (again) tend to flow towards more practical. I'm curious if the reactor geometry and fuel composition are the same, but at the same time I WOULDN'T be surprised.
It appears, the Zevs nuclear-electric space tug made some progress, before money got tight. DETAILS, CONTEXT: russianspaceweb.com/tem.html…

@nukeBEARD is one of those folks that's helped me a lot over the years with my understanding of astronuke systems. It's great to see him up on stage! Congratulations!

Lucas is an old friend of mine. I'm super excited for him! This is potentially the second US reactor to fly, and the fact that it's a critical assembly is fascinating to me on many levels... but critical assemblies are fascinating to me for some reason. 1/
I finally have a project @AtomosSpace I can talk about. I'm working on space nuclear power, but we have a problem: too many people think it's impossible despite new regulations. So, we're going to launch a cheap critical assembly to prove it can be done: atomos.docsend.com/view/pcuk…

IMO, it's pathetic and problematic that a 100WTh short term reactor with an incredibly temperature sensitive moderator is cheaper to fly (admittedly on a VERY inexpensive rocket) than to test terrestrially. What does this say for the terrestrial energy sector? Nothing good. 2/

It seems like @AtomosSpace is taking a similar position to @oklo - taking the first-mover burden to try and leverage that for better positioning and funding going forward. I wish @Vanessa_J_Clark and @RamblingWilliam the best in their efforts!

Good luck and eloquent delivery to everyone involved in NETS next week! This is an incredible time for astronuke, and NETS has been at the center of that for 30 years now. Can't wait to see what the week brings! If you're there and tweeting, TAG ME PLEASE!!!

I'm working on reorienting the blog towards "here's this new thing, here's why it's cool, and here's a bit of history behind the cool thing." This week will hopefully help give me ideas!

"The decadal survey ranked the Neptune-Triton flagship lower than the Uranus mission due to trajectory constraints in the 2030s. The alignment of the planets make it easier for a spacecraft to launch toward Uranus in that decade." Uh... spaceflightnow.com/2022/04/1…

If you don't go nuclear, and bite the bullet on sanity a decade of costs, you get nothing much... but if you push forward (with an eye to programmatic failings) it's a HUGE step forward. This is what we WANT. We just can't have it - bc we aren't going nuclear.
