A few months back, I started looking in detail at the responsibility on schools to focus on reading for pleasure.
Despite a decade of it being pushed in schools more and more, young people are reading for pleasure less and less.
What is going on?

This is a must-read by #TheBellFoundation for all schools’ EAL teams and school leaders!
Interview with Ofsted Inspector Mark Sims: “All teachers must see themselves as teachers of EAL” - The Bell Foundation @Prendergast_PLS bell-foundation.org.uk/news/…
Where are multilingual learners and the support for them in this picture?
Exactly. Everywhere.
Not running alongside school, but woven through every part of the school.
Same direction, same goals- not parallel lines that never meet.
#EAL#multilingual
Mainstream teaching multilingual students who are new to English is challenging- not because they aren’t learning, but because their learning is often invisible through language.
With the right strategies, we can make their learning visible.

I can't express my gratitude and thanks enough to you for allowing me to visit. I learned a great deal and great to see multilingual learners being so well supported. Thank you 😊
On Friday, I had the pleasure of hosting @BifieldJonathan@TrinityAcademyL.
After connecting on social media, it was great to finally meet in person and exchange ideas on supporting multilingual learners.
No photos-we were too busy talking and still ran out of time!
How can teaching phonics make a difference for multilingual students beyond primary school?
In a new post, @_MrLevick, Teacher of Reading, shares strategies and insights for supporting secondary learners: heddle-eal.com/insights/why-…#EAL@TrinityAcademyL
Supporting Students Who Are New To English (🧵1/7)
For learners new to English, especially those with interrupted education or weak literacy, mainstream lessons can feel like looking through a frosted window. (Pauline Gibbons, 1991).

The DfE Writing Framework offers strong guidance on writing development.
20% of pupils are multilingual&statements like: "Pupils’ grammar knowledge will be implicit from what they have learned as native speakers” risk overlooking the linguistic diversity in our classrooms. (1/3)

Adaptive Teaching and Scaffolding
Busy preparing for our CPD golden thread next year by creating a two page overview of the key aspects (this is page 1)
This draws heavily from mine and @MrsBallAP book, The Scaffolding Effect : amzn.eu/d/dmjKsOD
Adaptive teaching for multilingual learners isn't about doing more - it's about noticing more.
If a student is silent, lost or stuck, don’t assume they don’t understand ➡️respond with scaffolds: visuals, gestures, L1 use, sentence starters.
