We are very happy to share 2 publications just out from collaborations:
1-"Design of a proteolytic module for improved metabolic modeling of Bacteroides caccae", a collaboration with @INRAE_France @SLabarthe_led by soon-to-be PhD @AmandinePaulayjournals.asm.org/doi/full/10…
There are so many weird Biology quirks that I somehow missed before and am only just finding now...
Apparently translation can and *does* initiate from EVERY codon
With the caveat that any codon other than the canonical AUG / GUG / UUG options induce transcription at such wildly inefficient rates that they are nearly undetectable
But they DO happen 🤯
I wonder what weird and rare products might be floating around in our bodies, some of which might even be really important
How do brightly colored organisms survive long enough to warn predators when they are easier to predate than their cryptic peers?
A 2023 study looked at #amphibians with known warning coloration to assess how such displays evolve. scim.ag/6L8#ScienceMagArchives

🆕📢We are happy to share our latest publication in
@MicrobiomeJ about the use of probiotics that consume succinate to ameliorate the glucose homeostasis and inflammation in obesity and T2 diabetes.👇

Please to share this collaboration with @IISPereVirgili, out in @MicrobiomeJ! We show that Odoribacter laenus can reduce circulating succinate, improve glucose tolerance and obesity-related inflammation in obese mice -> potential next generation probiotics

Remarkably, we find an inverse scaling of somatic mutation rates with lifespan, a long-standing prediction of the somatic theory of ageing. This is consistent with a causative role of somatic mutations in ageing. Though we discuss other possible explanations [15/24]
New in Science: By combining thousands of modern and ancient genomes, researchers have constructed the largest human genealogy to date, providing insight into key events in human history together with their timings and geographical locations. fcld.ly/q1kf76d
Congratulations to Dr. Caroline Arcanjo and Pr. Céline Boulangé-Lecompte on their new paper (bit.ly/3rdzveU). We contributed to the transcriptomics data analysis back in 2019, science takes time! 1/2
The paper shows the suceptibility of a marine copepod species (crucial in the food chain) to a marine polluant (a pesticide). Data analysis was a collaboration between Biofidal, Dr. Andrew Jarnuczak, @UnivLHNormandie @Bio_Mathematica. Transcriptomics applied to ecotoxicology! 2/2
Amandine Paulay, who is doing her PhD thesis with @Bio_Mathematica@INRAE_MICALIS, will present some of her PhD results at #YRLS2021@YRLS_federation and @jobim_2021: "Flux Balance Analysis of a gut bacteria with its proteolytic activity". Congratulations to her! Credit A. Paulay
“Endless forms most beautiful”: Happy birthday to Charles Darwin, born #OTD in 1809, whose theory of #evolution by natural selection sparked a scientific revolution & changed the way we think about our place in the world. #DarwinDay
Our new paper! The hybrid short and long reads approach allowed the identification of novel laterally transferred regions. The detection of oenological SNPs revealed the existence of many levels of modulation for the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds. sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
