The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff, with effect from June 30, 2026.
Commissioned into the 2nd Lancers in December 1986, Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth will become the Indian Army's 31st Chief of the Army Staff and the first Armoured Corps officer to be appointed Army Chief after almost 30 years.
Currently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lt Gen Seth has commanded some of the Army's most important operational formations, including the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, South Western Command and Southern Command. He has also been closely associated with force modernisation and capability development initiatives at Army Headquarters.
He will succeed General Upendra Dwivedi, who retires from service on June 30.
