Today we honor the life and legacy of Beatrice “Bea” Lumpkin — CTU member, educator, labor organizer, and steadfast advocate for working people. For more than a century, Bea dedicated herself to building a stronger labor movement and a more just world, standing alongside generations of organizers in struggles for workers’ rights, civil rights, public education, and environmental justice. From organizing on factory floors as a teenager to remaining active in CTU’s Climate Justice Committee in her later years, Bea led with conviction, courage, and an unwavering belief in collective action. We mourn her passing and extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and comrades. May her memory continue to inspire us in the work ahead.

"Balancing the 2027 budget should not come at the cost of educating our children today. But it must not come at the cost of educating our children's children tomorrow." In a new Chicago Tribune op-ed, President @JoeFergChicago pulls no punches on the financial crisis CPS finds itself in. Legacy debt, mounting maintenance costs on aging facilities, and soaring pension liabilities have pushed the district into a deep financial hole. The path forward requires bold action: right-sizing facilities, cutting maintenance costs, and tackling the district's debt load. With Board of Education elections approaching in November, the moment for fresh leadership and real solutions is ripe. 📰Read the full article here: chicagotribune.com/2026/06/1… 🔗 Visit our website to read our latest analysis on CPS' debt burden: civicfed.org/understanding-m…

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said weeks before the primary election in March that the bulk of the problems with the county’s property tax system had been solved. But with another 2-month delay looming, Preckwinkle said Tuesday that "structural reform" is needed.
Cook County property owners will have until at least October to pay the second installment of their 2025 property taxes, officials announced Tuesday. to.wttw.com/4ecfWKx

Urban Center on the recent charter renewals.
Chicago families just got put through the wringer so that appointed board members can score political points with Brandon Johnson and their CTU puppet masters. After months of delays, endless debate, and uncertainty for thousands of students and families, the Board approved all of the charter renewals that were being held up in the first place. Schools qualified. Schools were renewed. The families suffered through the uncertainty anyway. Common sense isn’t complicated: if a school passes the test, it gets renewed. Anything else is politics. It’s time that board members put kids ahead of politics. #Chicago #CPS #SchoolChoice #Education #ParentsFirst #CommonSense chalkbeat.org/chicago/2026/0…
