The most insane outcome of Makerfield is an Andy Burnham win (likely) followed by Burnham taking Starmer’s crown (50/50) and then moving full steam ahead with PR. That blows the whole right-wing game wide open. You’ll get less tactical voting on the Right, with Tory and Restore Britain voters knowing that while their parties won’t win a majority, they’ll be in a position to act as kingmakers in a right-wing coalition. That means fewer tactical votes for Reform and a messy new reality of coalitions, deals, and confidence-and-supply arrangements. Burnham of course has his own headache, cutting deals with the toxic Zack Polanski and probably the SNP. But the basic logic is unavoidable. Burnham knows he can’t win an outright majority under FPTP anyway. And under that system Rupert Lowe becomes a potential kingmaker in 2029. Wild times.
