50 years ago today, 10,000 Black children and teenagers took to the streets of Soweto, South Africa to protest against being forced to study in Afrikaans, the language of their white oppressors. 176 were killed and thousands injured when police fired into the crowd. 13 year-old Hector Pieterson was one of the first to die. This photo by Sam Nzima of his limp body being carried by a fellow student, flanked by his sister Antoinette Sithole, has come to immortalise that tragic day. #Soweto
