🏆🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿BREAKING: VICTORY IN SCOTLAND! In a triumph for hope over despair, life over death & support over suicide, the Scottish Parliament has voted AGAINST assisted suicide. MSPs have settled the issue for a generation & dealt a mortal blow to assisted suicide in Westminster.🧵1/

⁩ ‘“Given the lack of resources for palliative care, there is an obvious risk that old people, especially those with embarrassing conditions, will try to make up for the inadequacies of the NHS by “doing the right thing”. An insightful article. apple.news/AcITLrTR3SpSRdmUj….

Dear @Sandeshgulhane, bmj.com/content/392/bmj.s250… please read this from Canadian GP @rljcoelho, this choice crosses a Rubicon and will have societal consequences. How can you say it is safe when it is not clear which regimen will be used and there are known complications in other jurisdictions? As a GP you will be aware of RCGP Scotland’s opposition to the bill, can you recognise the risks for the profession in this legislation rcgp.org.uk/News/Concerns-ov…

The Assisted Dying Bill remains deeply flawed. Many placed their hope in the Bill’s sponsors to improve it in the House of Lords - that has not happened. There remain serious concerns about the impact it would have on the most vulnerable in society. It must not go forward.

After hours of scrutiny, and no meaningful changes to the Bill accepted, experts and professional bodies have not changed their position: The Assisted Dying Bill remains deeply flawed and unsafe. Bill supporters blame everyone else but won’t make the Bill safe.

'In our professional judgement, the Bill as it stands does not contain sufficiently robust safeguards to protect patients from coercion, untreated mental illness, or unmet social and palliative care needs'👇

I don't think anyone now claims that the Assisted Dying Bill in its current form and as it was voted through at 3rd Reading in the Commons is anything but a vague and poorly drafted disaster waiting to happen.

It’s been an honour to be BSG Senior Secretary. My 1st BSG meeting was in Glasgow and never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d be sitting on that stage hosting the meeting almost 20 years later. To all @BSGTrainees keep going, it could be you. 🙏 to everyone @BritSocGastro

So many great things happened at the @BritSocGasto #BSGLIVE25 conference in Glasgow this week. But the main highlight for @Gut_BMJ was our Editor in chief Professor Emad El-Omar @emadelomar receiving his "BSG Lifetime Achievement Award" from the @BritSocGastro President Professor Colin Rees @BottProf. Such a richly deserved award and an acknowledgement of how much Emad means to so many of us. He is not only a great scientist, clinician, leader and mentor but a fantastic person, leader and human being. A father figure to many. Professor El-Omar steps down in December from the role of EIC of @Gut_BMJ and will be hugely missed, but we will always be grateful for everything Emad has done for #TeamGUT for the last 16 years. He is a true legend! @BritSocGastro @FrontGastro_BMJ @BMJOpen_Gastro @eGastro_BMJ @bmj_company @AlexanderGerbes @ruben_hernaez @Siew_C_Ng
