And tweets like this are rage bait. Don't advocate for bans that take tools out of the hands of teachers and students. I will never understand why so much middle school writing isn’t built around experimentation, challenge, fun, and creativity. Middle schoolers love to play, laugh, take risks, and test boundaries. When we make most writing overly serious, we turn them away from what they do best: playing with language, experimenting with literary devices and vocabulary, and rising to creative challenges.

If you choose not to make your children do hard things they don’t like when they’re 5, you’ll really struggle to make them do hard things they don’t like when they’re 15. You’re also still likely to be trying to make them do hard things when they’re 25, and still living with you.

**Vocabulary Activities!*** Many of my students are intimidated by “big words.” I found that if I focused on one word a day, and allowed students to experiment with words via low-stakes writing prompts, the intimidation disappeared. The purpose of these activities is for students to play and experiment with language. One word a day is not the most “efficient” system for learning vocabulary.
