Scarier than the fact of these iMacs being scrapped is the evidence that people have such a blasé attitude toward destruction. I have seen employees at dozens of recyclers destroy valuable electronics for simple amusement — MacBooks get launched across the room into the MacBook bin, and if they miss, it explodes into pieces against the concrete floor and everyone cheers.

What bugs me is that these days tech doesn’t even last long enough to be processed by the public’s subconscious, so that society can comment in any meaningful way. Nothing created now will have the social significance of the VCR or any retro tech. Actually the opposite — tech today is designed to be invisible and simple provide a window into the internet. When it becomes sub-optimal for that primary purpose we consider it use-less and discard it, without realizing the device is still as good as it ever was, and the actual fault is simply our failure to imagine another purpose. #righttorefurbish #righttorepair
