Today marks a historic milestone for the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community: the @US_FDA has approved Tzield for use in individuals ages 8–17 with stage 3 T1D. This is the first disease-modifying therapy ever approved for stage 3 T1D! Tzield preserves beta cell function in newly diagnosed individuals, which has been shown to result in fewer hypoglycemic events, lower insulin use, reduced burden of care, and improved A1c. We'll keep working to ensure people with stage 3 T1D everywhere, not just in the U.S., have access to therapies that help them live healthier lives. Breakthrough T1D and the T1D Fund have supported the development of this therapy for over 30 years, and we're grateful to the FDA for recognizing the urgent unmet need in T1D and expediting Tzield's approval through the accelerated approval pathway. We also thank @sanofi for their continued research and the T1D community for advocating for therapies that change the course of this disease. Read more here: breakthrought1d.org/news-and…

In an exciting update for the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community, Afrezza—a rapid-acting, inhaled mealtime insulin—was approved by the FDA for use in children and adolescents ages 6 with T1D. This makes Afrezza the first and only inhaled mealtime insulin approved for use in the pediatric T1D population. Learn more at the link below! bit.ly/4o2c4QN

Exciting news! Abbott’s Libre Duo received the CE mark in Europe! It is the first sensor to track both glucose and ketones continuously. Late last year, Breakthrough T1D, led by Chief Medical Officer Thomas Danne, convened a panel of experts to devise consensus recommendations for how continuous ketone monitoring (CKM) may improve outcomes for individuals at risk for developing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This device is currently under review at the FDA in the US, and we look forward to a future in which DKA is more easily prevented and the T1D community can fully experience the benefits of CKM.
Meet Libre Duo systems: the world’s first dual glucose-ketone sensing technology.* Detecting rising ketones early is especially important for people living with diabetes because diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) can escalate and lead to hospitalization in a matter of hours.** For the first time, a single sensor provides real-time visibility into glucose for daily diabetes management and rising ketones, helping people act earlier before DKA develops. We applaud @RepKimSchrier and @RepJohnJoyce and @SenatorShaheen and @SenatorCollins for introducing the Strengthening Collective Resources for Encouraging Education Needed (SCREEN) for Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) Act of 2026. The bipartisan legislation aims to increase awareness and improve early detection of T1D.  Screening and early detection of T1D can save lives, help people make important decisions about their health, and potentially change the course of this disease.  Too often, children and adults are diagnosed only after becoming critically ill. Screening for T1D can be done through a simple blood test, and ongoing monitoring can help families avoid medical emergencies and take action sooner. Take action here: breakthrought1d.org/site/Adv…

Thank you @RepDianaDeGette and @RepGusBilirakis for your leadership!
All the experts agree: FDA should simplify access to complex treatments for people with severe Type 1 Diabetes. That's why @RepGusBilirakis and I sent a bipartisan letter to the FDA urging the agency to revisit its policies so that more patients can be helped. As Co-Chairs of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus, we are committed to improving outcomes for people living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Another step forward! Our champions and Congressional Diabetes Caucus Co-Chairs @RepDianaDeGette and @RepGusBilirakis just sent a letter to the FDA noting our HHS proposal and urging a new look at the regulatory pathway for deceased donor islets. These islets can help people with type 1 diabetes today. The pathway needs to catch up, and we'll keep pushing until it does. Thank you to our champions in the House!
