Helping wild animals is not only a moral opportunity, it is a responsibility, and it starts with seeing their suffering as something we must try to address. My latest for @latimes. latimes.com/opinion/story/20…

The Trump administration unveiled dietary guidelines this week that flip the food pyramid, encouraging greater consumption of meat. That’s not what the average American, who already eats 227 pounds of meat a year, needs to hear. My latest for @MSNOWNews. ms.now/opinion/rfk-jr-new-fo…

As Americans are now eating more meat than ever before, with that number only predicted to go up, @Reducetarian founder @BrianKateman says incremental changes are crucial: “Every possible reduction, no matter how small, has benefits.” @JessLReid reports: buff.ly/Znx8nFi

The sad irony is it is exactly this kind of perspective that increases the chances we will torture digital minds. We must keep an open mind and embrace the adage, never say never, to avoid becoming a modern day Descartes.

A true legend in every sense of the word. It meant the world to me she recorded a welcome video for the Reducetarian Summit and blurbed Meat Me Halfway. She was an unmatched force for good and no doubt will continue to be a source of inspiration for many. nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna235…

A great talk by a great person doing great work toward a world without factory farms. Check it out!
My TED talk just dropped! It's a call to our common humanity to tackle factory farming, the great hidden moral crisis of our time. Future generations will judge our treatment of animals harshly. But we can act now to end the worst abuses. Full video 🔽

I recently saw the horror movies TOGETHER & WEAPONS (w/ @TylerAlterman) & while both were scary, neither touches the gruesomeness of nature. Effective altruism is worthy of critique but it also may be the only movement serious about helping wild animals. time.com/7309600/zombie-rabb…

This is our best rhetorical shot at getting people to cut back on animal products (and even become vegetarian or vegan)—with compassion for being human. Kudos to @SigalSamuel for one of the best articulations of the @reducetarian concept in @voxdotcom. vox.com/future-perfect/42227…

Two additional thoughts: 1) Your diet is only one lever. There are many others. Help shape society at large. Here are some ideas: reducetarian.org/how-to-get-…

I think it’s good to counterbalance @MikeGrunwald’s version of switchitarianism that got a lot of well-deserved media attention this month, but I still think the best path forward is one that emphasizes eating more plants, not encouraging people to eat more beef and less chicken.

It’s one thing to torture trillions of animals on factory farms. It’s another to ignore it is happening. I hope digital minds don’t come to exist because I expect humans will torture them. But if they do, an AI takeover is probably our best bet for a non-hellscape world.
Replying to @bshlgrs
That seems flagrantly wrong. What exactly do you think humans are already doing that's so horrible? We've had a few centuries of wonderful progress, prosperity, & creativity without needing AI.

The Old EA Who Lost Her Donations A Proverb on Epistemic Absurdism An EA had only $3 to give to anti-malarial bednets. One day, she lost her $3. Her EA group said, “I’m so sorry. That is so net negative. You must be so upset.” The EA just said, “Maybe.” A few days later, she found out her $3 had been stolen by a man living on less than a $1 a day, and it was basically a non-consensual GiveDirectly donation. Her EA group said, “Congratulations! This is so net positive. You must be so happy!” The EA just said, “Maybe.” The poor man used his money to buy factory farmed chicken, causing far more suffering in the world. Her EA group said, “I’m so sorry. This is so net negative. You must be so upset.” The EA just said, “Maybe.” The poor man, better nourished, was able to pull himself out of the poverty trap and work on AI safety, eventually leading to an aligned artificial superintelligence that ended all factory farming in the world. Her neighbors said, “Congratulations! This is so net positive. You must be so happy!” The EA just said, “Maybe.” And it just keeps going. Because consequentialism is the ethics of the gods. For we are but monkeys and cannot know the consequences of our actions. Are deontology or virtue ethics the solution? The EA just says, “Maybe.”
The most important lesson I learned after 10 years in EA: widen your f***king confidence intervals. You know 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 about doing good in the world. Seriously. Thread. 🧵 Full post here t.ly/a1hy

I am against switchitarianism, & I encourage you to be too. Creating more suffering by switching from beef to chickens is just silly. The entire reason climate change is a problem is because of the suffering it generates. Eat more plants, & either way, drop the moral gymnastics.
