They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. HMNB Devonport remembers.

Welcome home to 68 year old ex-Plymouth lifeboatman, Barry Perrins - having spent nine years alone, sailing 30,000 miles around the world. Great to see him safely back in Plymouth waters - and welcomed home by his old crew mates. BZ Barry

As a young officer, I had privilege of serving under and near him on a number of occasions - he was certainly an enigmatic, mercurial and instructive beacon to follow and learn from. A genuine legendary figure in a forest of giants. (Thank you Matt, @FCDOMJLodge for sharing)

We all paused today to reflect on VJ Day. I thought of the veterans I’ve known from that campaign. My Scoutmaster Tony, my school teacher’s husband. The impact of that war remained in their eyes. And I thought of ‘Quartered safe out here’, an instructive read.Freedom is not free.

This was going on just outside my office window. Sounded proper fun. Great to see / hear service people engaged in team games. BZ both teams for great team spirit.
🏏 The fighting Clams (HMS Audacious) & the Gundogs (HMS Astute) took a well-deserved break & met up on the HMS Drake Cricket Pitch for the Subflot S Cup. The Clams were victorious - then both crews relaxed with a BBQ ready for another day of #submarine maintenance tomorrow!

Happy Birthday Jim - the oldest living Royal Marine. A good friend of @HMNBDevonport his portrait hangs in the hallway of the wardroom, commissioned by His Majesty the King.
☕️ Ahead of the 80th anniversary of VJ Day, The Duchess of Edinburgh sat down with James ‘Jim’ Wren, a 105-year-old Royal Marines veteran, at his care home in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Mr Wren survived the sinking of HMS Repulse in 1941 and was later a Prisoner of War for three and a half years, having been captured whilst escaping from Singapore in February 1942. Her Royal Highness is Patron of The Java Far East Prisoner of War Club 1942.

Did you know that on this day in 1812 the first stones were being laid to build the internationally acclaimed Plymouth breakwater, thereby allowing the Royal Navy to adopt Devonport as a viable Naval Base. Here’s me ‘conducting(!)’ HM RM Band Plymouth on the breakwater last year.
