2/ Lawyers like @LawForNature@paulpowlesland have been calling for nature to be granted rights for years, to better defend habitats and species from destruction.
A Rights of Nature Act would transform how we currently relate to nature as mere 'property' or a 'resource'.
A new campaign is lobbying dictionaries to change the definition of the word ‘nature’. But is this a good idea? My reflections on the #WeareNature campaign led by @LawForNature What are your thoughts?...

You may have seen the #WeAreNature campaign we launched earlier this week!
There's more detail in this blog post: Jessie Mond Wedd tells us more about how the campaign started, why definitions matter, and the negotiations with the OED.

So proud that our team (led by Jessie Mond-Wedd) are behind this important campaign.
Until we understand the interdependency of all life (including ours) on nature we will continue on a heartbreaking path.
Humans are a part of nature.
Announcing our new campaign: #WeAreNature, joint with Frieda Gormley and Javvy Royle of House of Hackney.
Dictionary definitions treat nature as separate from humans, but we think humans are part of Nature. We want to change that. See more and sign:

Just a quick note to say I’m going to move over to Bluesky as much as possible. I now find this space chaotic and uninteresting. Most of my favourite voices have gone silent. This is me over there, it seems a lot better so far. bsky.app/profile/brontiemari…
LFN co-director @BrontieMaria speaks out on behalf of trees in this wonderful article by @damiengayle - “Really, what we need is to have a reckoning of our relationship with trees, and how important they are to us [and] our continued success...”

From Simon Armitage bringing tears to our eyes, to @BrontieMaria suggesting that nature could have legal rights, and so much in-between, every session at last week's #ClimateCreatives was fascinating & insightful.

ALT A screen grab of one of the Climate Creatives 23 videos - the keynote featuring Simon Armitage and Bryony Kimmings. In the still we can see Simon Armitage reading a poem, sitting next to host Philippa Thomas.
Lovely to be at the BBC today talking about the concepts of nature positive governance and rights of nature. Asking “but what if Nature DID have rights?” #climatecreatives
💭What does it take to change the world?
💡 For the #ClimateCreatives Three Ideas To Change The World session we now welcome three original thinkers to speak about how systems change and the role of the individual:

- @BrontieMaria
- Pim Sullivan-Tailyour

Heading over to Threads now. Haven’t enjoyed Twitter for a good few months and it feels more pointless every time I log in.
Come and find me @brontiemaria same as on here!
Really loved being a part of this amazing group of people at @DartingtonTrust this week. Let’s see where this goes next! Things are moving fast on #rightsofnature for uk rivers!
Loved that the organisers built in a dip in the river first thing in the morning!
Nestled appropriately in a meander of the River Dart, the UK’s first conference of river rights activists came together this week. We discussed what drew us to Rights of Nature, the advantages of different legal, political & activist interventions, & which of these we’ll pursue.
Great to chat with @BrontieMaria from @LawForNature about the challenges #EppingForest faces from high levels of #pollution, adjacent development & planning applications which don't properly consider the Forest, and what can be done to protect it. Thank you!
#LoveEppingForest
I’ve never encountered a more perfect example of how screwed up our conversation about land access & responsibility is, & how leniently we view environmental crime by landowners, than this scene I encountered on the River Roding today
