Nigerian Christians—especially ministers—would benefit immensely from reading C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters.
In this masterpiece, Lewis humorously reveals how we often surrender the very front where the devil is most active, while vigorously protecting the front where we think he is active.
Too often, we pattern our spiritual warfare after the melodramatic portrayals of old Nollywood movies. Meanwhile, the enemy advances by stealth, unchecked—or worse, aided by Christians themselves—on a subtle, almost-feels-right, serpentine front.
Seemingly insignificant details, innocuous habits, sensible appetites, splendid achievements, sterling talents, and superior intellects…all can be made to run amok.
Getting bogged down in the wrong battle is a sure way to lose the war. It is wasting armoury on a decoy, guarding the shiny gates when the enemy is already within the walls.
But all hope is not lost. Read the book.
