In a previous life, I was a small part of the large team protecting the WashDC Hilton for these events. What we witnessed last night was a deranged man attempting a heinous act. He was stopped when a meticulously-made, expertly-staffed security plan functioned as designed.

Journalism is a team sport. Care for yourself and watch out for your teammates! #JournalistSafety
After moments of crisis and trauma, like those witnessed at the White House Correspondents Dinner, feelings of overwhelming stress are normal. We need to care for ourselves and our colleagues. Psychological First Aid is a way to offer colleagues a place to recover and path to resources they may need. For more info visit: mhpsshub.org/resource/pfa-a-… #WHCD #DCPress

Situational Awareness is your first line of defense and more important PPE. Always be aware of what is within 5 to 10 feet of your location. This is the minimum personal safety perimeter. Every object in this radius should be known to you: what it is, whether it was there when you arrived, and whether anything has changed. Bags, backpacks, boxes, containers, or any unattended item that appears in your safety perimeter should be identified and assessed. Beyond that immediate perimeter, keep active watch on everything within 30 to 45 feet. Scan for changes in how people are moving, where they’re going, and whether anything in the environment has shifted since you arrived. A crowd that suddenly opens up in one spot, a person pushing against the flow, an unattended bag that wasn’t there a few minutes ago, someone whose behavior doesn’t fit the scene. Any of these is a signal to move. @CrisisReadyNews offers the most comprehensive #HEFAT curriculums available. Our holistic programs deliver resources addressing the physical safety, digital security, trauma-focused first aid, and mental wellness needs of journalists. If you or your newsroom has safety or security concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Read more—> crisisreadymedia.org/Explosi… #NonProfit #JournalistSafety
