🔶Key hazards to expect🔶
🔸Whiteouts Rapid Accumulation: loss of visibility, especially on highways. Vehicles sliding off shoulders, stranded motorists.
🔸Highway crews may become unable to keep up with the falling snow, road conditions can quickly deteriorate.
🔸While traveling on highways, be away of your location, should you become stranded, snow can obstruct landmarks or roadway signs.
🔸Cold exposure: hypothermia and frostbite can happen fast, especially if you’re wet or stuck.
🔸Downed trees and power lines: falling limbs, unstable poles, live wires hidden under snow and ice.
🚩Beware of downed live wires🚩
🔸Carbon monoxide risk: running a vehicle or generator near snowbanks can trap exhaust.
🔸Communication and power outages: dead zones, overloaded networks, limited fuel and closed services.
🔷Before You Go🔷
🔹Share your route, location plan, and check-in schedule with your editor/desk.
🔹Fuel up early (keep at least half a tank), top off windshield washer fluid, check tires.
🔹Dress in layers (avoid cotton), and pack a dry set of clothes.
🔹Assume you may lose service: download maps, key contacts, and notes offline.

🔴High-calorie food. MRE, canned food (canned beef stew can be eaten cold), bars, nuts, jerky.
🔴Small camp cooker & fuel (ventilate car during use)
If you become stuck:
🔴Stay with the vehicle unless very near to a safer space.
🔴If you must run the engine, do so intermittently, for heat and power. (Be sure to clear the tailpipe and surrounding snow first and ventilate)
