Most people don't realize you can run a fully systematic short-selling equities algos through the @public API
I just enabled it on my mean-reversion engine. 84 names, ATR-sized, broker-side stops, engine-managed take profits, EOD flatten
The full short stack:
- Limit sells at mean-reversion levels above price
- Stops above entry (broker-held)
- Synthetic take-profit below entry (engine-monitored)
- EOD flatten before close to avoid overnight gap risk
What unlocked it was a single API parameter - open_close_indicator=OPEN - that tells Public "this sell opens a new short" instead of "closes an existing long"
Retail broker APIs have caught up. The difference between "I can systematically trade equities long" and "I can systematically trade equities long AND short" is literally one enum.
This is what the bull-only retail era looked like ending
