ALT Fly past by a Lancaster bomber. Sir Barnes Wallis was born in Ripley and Lancasters were used in the low flying Operation Chastise raids on the Ruhr Valley dams in WW2 with Wallis's 'Bouncing Bombs'.
These images show the "rolling into position" of the New Tinsley Marshalling Yard bridge in Jan 1963 ( Ad Rem, 1963). The 7 million pound contract was won by Henry Boot & Sons( #CivilEngineering) & the #ButterleyCompany was a sub-contractor.
The 1st photo shows the #ButterleyCo
canal & basin, at 166ft long & formed part of the railway connecting loop from the main lines to the New Tinsley Marshalling Yard.
The 2nd image shows the deck units being erected using the 60 ton lorry mounted mobile crane.
The 3rd & 4th images show the centre section of the new #bridge being lifted into position.
The fifth photograph shows the bridge in "its final position ready for jacking down on to bearings."

The #Bridgeyard at the #ButterleyIronworks was very busy. This is shown in 1 particular photograph.
It shows in the foreground the "trial erection of Whetstone #Railway Bridge for British Railways, London Midland Region" which carried the Great Central line over the #M1 a few
miles south of Leicester.
Shown at the back of the photo is "Bridge 65 for the LMR to carry the Walton Junction to Preston line over the #River Douglas at Rufford."
L of this photograph is a #crane destined for the "Park Gate Iron and Steel company."

By 1866 the #CannonStreet Railway Station, opened in 1863, had 9 lines with 5 platforms. The bridge over the River Thames was over 700ft long, with 5 spans ( 3 of 147 ft & 2 of 135ft) of 'the continuous #girder system.'

Cannon Street Station which was estimated to take 18 months to complete.
