I have been asked an interesting question. Why does London’s Moorgate tube station have a mix of “traditional” bar-and-Circle roundels... and weird diamonds? Well... (1/6)

TfL has recently confirmed a tender to replace its 29 ageing battery engineering locomotives: some of this indefatigable yellow fleet have components over 100yrs old. They’re not seen often (usually operating away from public services) so here are my snaps of L52 under repair at Ruislip Depît, L27 & a consist of 6 locos readying for the night shift there, plus L48 on duty at Bank during the rebuild project. New locos are due at design stage in 2029.

If you lived in Metro-land in the 90s or 2000s, these Metropolitan line moquettes will be familiar. You might recall the bouncy seats, the whirring of air compressors at each stop, or the proud little Metropolitan Railway crests which persisted until 2012 by the driver’s cabs too
#OnThisDay 65 years ago the first A60 Stock train - built for the Metropolitan Line electrification to Amersham (hence the 'A') - ran in passenger service. They bowed out in September 2012, having provided 51 years service @ltmuseum buff.ly/sxNtsrI

This rage is misinformed. Calling it “woke” and weirdly focusing on the word “diversity” here fundamentally misses the point. But I suspect you’re well aware of that. The site is being renamed Bristol Dockyards because it is already much more than the SSGB which sits within it. There’ll be new, extra exhibits about the heritage of Bristol’s massive docks - and the incredible diversity of that heritage. It increases the remit of the site, widens its appeal and safeguards the future of its major exhibit, the SSGB, and the Brunel exhibition which features a giant version of the small man himself, smoking a cigar. It’s a new name which better reflects what paying tourists will get. But I guess the boring, sensible reality isn’t as good as manufactured fury for social engagement statistics, right?

For the first time in over a century, passengers coming through Sheffield train station will be able to hear and see the River Sheaf, which runs underneath the busy platforms. The Lightwell on Platform 5, right in the centre, now opens up to nature, to the river that gives Sheffield its name and its industrial history. Visits like these are a joy.

A bar is opening in two of the ex-Jubilee line tube train cars on a Shoreditch rooftop & viaduct. The Village Underground bar below is extending up into them: since 2006 four cars have sat here as workspaces. Whilst the whole enterprise did begin as “affordable studios for creative people struggling to get a foothold in London” - it’s all change now, two decades on. Two of the cars have “been disposed of” and whilst the remaining pair will be “flexible artist workspaces during the day before switching over to support the evening venue”, I guess it is just another chapter in an ever-transitional fringeland of town. Britain’s @RoyalMail Postbus fleet eventually ran to more than 220 across the mainland & many islands; but they’re all gone now. @thepostalmuseum has one of the beepy-beepy little buses on display, but I’ll have to make do with this model. More #postbus joy in thread below

The loss of the integrated Scottish Post Bus services was not only a major inconvenience to the locals but also to tourism. The Post Bus waits for services North and South to cross at Achnasheen in August 1977

I don’t think Stoke on Trent stn is depressing at all: at its entrance is an incredible moving piece of architecture which few people actually realise exists at all. The stone arch – through which all passengers pass - is a memorial to the 152 North Staffordshire Railway employees who died in the 1914-18 War. The company & employees paid for it, and its installation - honouring those who stood and fell - was one of the final acts of the independent company before it was consumed by the LMS Railway in 1923. Six further men, identified since the end of WW1, have also now had their names added to the roll of honour.
In the most depressing train station. Any guesses

On this day in 1951, we became the World's First Preserved Railway. 75 years ago a group of amateurs ran a train, it wasn't a very long train and it only went as far as Rhydyronen - but it became the starting line for the global heritage railway movement, kicking off the idea...
